Overview
Amharic Bible Dictionary is a mobile app packaging 4,800+ biblical terms with Amharic definitions and Hebrew/Greek etymologies. It's the product of 23 years of research by Zelalem Mengistu, delivered as a phone-native experience with embedded Bible reading, term search, personal annotations, and a full Amharic keyboard. Free on iOS and Android.
The Challenge
For decades, Amharic-speaking Bible readers, preachers, and teachers relied on translated print dictionaries or word-of-mouth to reach the meaning behind biblical language. Nothing existed that combined comprehensive Amharic definitions with the original Hebrew and Greek etymologies — and nothing was on the phone, where readers actually study.
Our Solution
A native mobile app organized around fast term lookup, with every entry showing an Amharic definition alongside its Hebrew or Greek source. The app embeds a Bible reader so users can move between scripture and dictionary without leaving the app, supports personal annotations in Amharic, includes an Amharic keyboard, and surfaces a daily 'Word of the Day' to keep readers engaged between study sessions. Distribution through the App Store and Google Play makes it accessible to Amharic speakers wherever they live.
